Tampa, Washington & Chicago: hope to see you there

Here are three upcoming events that I’m marking on my schedule.  Perhaps a reader or two will decide to attend, but all of you should follow from afar.

April 24 – May 4:  United Methodist General Conference, Tampa, Florida

The national (international) convention of United Methodists only convenes every four years.  Thus, when they do gather, there is a lot of business to take care of.  The first week consists of committee meetings and hearings, and the plenary sessions take place the second week.

The Methodists are the largest of the “mainline” Protestant denominations with over 8 million members.  For comparison, the ELCA has around 4 million, the Episcopal and Presbyterian churches slightly over 2 million each, and the UCC slightly over 1 million.  Of these five denominations, the Methodists are the remaining holdout for ordaining gay clergy, and that will certainly be the issue at the forefront of the upcoming General Convention.

The Methodists are also the most international of the American denominations.  While the ELCA belongs to the worldwide Lutheran Federation, that is not a governing body that decides ELCA policy.  The same is true with the Episcopalians who are part of the worldwide Anglican Communion.  But, within the polity of the UMC, their international sister congregations and conferences are not mere affiliates but actually belong inside the denomination; thus there will be large numbers of international delegates to the upcoming General Convention.

This is also a significant part of the reason why the UMC has not yet voted to ordain gay clergy—the international delegates tend to be much more conservative than the US delegates.  The principal gay advocacy group within the UMC is the Reconciling Ministries Network, and  I recently visited with Troy Plummer, their executive director, and Pastor Bonnie Beckonchrist, their board chair.  Both are cautiously optimistic about prospects for favorable legislation in Tampa, but suggest it will take nearly 65% favorable vote from the US delegates to bring the total margin to 50% or better.

June 25 – 28: UCC Coalition National Gathering, Elmhurst College, Illinois

The United Church of Christ has the most progressive history regarding gay inclusion of any of the five principal mainline denominations.  The UCC Coalition is their advocacy arm, and this year’s national gathering will be historic.  In June, 1972 openly gay seminarian William Johnson was ordained in a UCC conference in northern California, and this year’s gathering will celebrate the 40th anniversary of his ordination.  Elmhurst College of Elmhurst, Illinois (a west Chicago suburb) will host the gathering and will also be the home of The William B. Johnson “Guestship”.

William JohnsonElmhurst College has named its annual LGBT Guestship in honor of an esteemed alumnus, the Reverend Dr. William R. Johnson. A member of the Class of 1968, Johnson is a United Church of Christ minister and vice president for member relations of the UCC’s Council for Health and Human Service Ministries. In 1972, he became the first openly gay person in modern history to gain ordination to the mainstream Christian ministry.

“For four decades, he has worked tirelessly and effectively on behalf of the rights and dignity of all people and, in particular, of LGBT people of faith and their loved ones,” said President S. Alan Ray in announcing the William R. Johnson Guestship. “He has provided counsel and support to hundreds of LGBT seminarians and clergy in the UCC and beyond.” Ray noted that a scholarship in Johnson’s name supports openly gay UCC seminarians studying for parish ministry.

July 6 – 10: Biennial Assembly of Lutherans Concerned, Washington, D.C.

I attended the 2010 Biennial in Minneapolis, and I hope to attend this year also.  In 2010, LCNA celebrated the momentous changes at the ECLA Churchwide Assembly of 2009.  The preacher during the primary worship service was former NY Synod Bishop Stephen Bouman, who currently works within the ELCA home office as Executive Director of Congregational and Synodical Mission.  His participation symbolized that gays and their advocates were now insiders, and Bouman’s sermon encouraged LCNA to use their gifts of advocacy for those who remain on the margins, especially the immigrant.

This year, the symbolism will be heightened as the keynote address will be given by none other than Mark Hanson, the Presiding Bishop of the ELCA.

LCNA Reconciling Works logoReconciling Works 2012 is more than a conference. It is an opportunity to explore and live out the work of reconciliation that we are called to do. Justice requires reconciliation, and reconciliation takes effort. Throughout our time together, we will work on justice issues from the intersection of oppressions (racism, sexism, ablism, etc.) and through the lens of full participation of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities in the life of the Lutheran Church.

We’ll worship together, using a rich variety of traditions of the worshipping community. We’ll provide a blend of the familiar and the unique drawing on our Lutheran heritage and the wealth of liturgical practice in the area. We’ll network with one another, hear stories of joy and frustration, and make decisions together about the future direction of Lutherans Concerned / North America and our Reconciling in Christ communities.

I’m back!!

Well, at least for the moment.

I have been pouring hours and hours into my book project, Gays in the Pulpit.  My working draft is now over 170 pages, which is probably half.  And the stories!  And the people!

Chicago is home to Reconciling Ministries Network—the Methodist LGBTQ advocacy group–and I have visited with Troy Plummer (their director), Pastor Bonnie Beckonchrist (their board chair), Pastor Morris Floyd (activist in the 80’s and 90’s), and Mark Bowman (original founder).  Bowman is also the director of LGBTran Archives, which contains biographies and more about leading LGBTQ icons.  Turns out I already knew Steve Webster of Madison, Wisconsin who organized the first Methodist gay caucus back in 1975.

Thanks to these excellent resources, my draft includes chapters covering the Methodist history up to around 2000.  The Methodists are the remaining holdout among the five principal mainline Protestant denominations.  The others (ELCA, Presbyterian, Episcopal, and United Church of Christ) all ordain gay clergy, but the upcoming UMC quadrennial General Conference may change that.  It’s close, with US delegates firmly on board, but because the UMC also has delegations from Africa, the Philippines, and elsewhere who tend to be very conservative vis a vis LGBTQ issues, the US delegates may need around 65% positive to offset the likely 90% negative from outside the US.  The Conference is scheduled the end of April in Tampa, and I’m thinking I may attend and do some live-blogging as I did during the historic ELCA Assembly in 2009.

I am also up to around the year 2000 in my ELCA chapters.  Chicago is home to both the ELCA archives and the Lutherans Concerned (LCNA) archives.  I recently returned to Minnesota and had a delightful lunch with Ruth Frost and Phyllis Zillhart of the famous extra ordinem ordinations in San Francisco in 1990, and I have been in email correspondence with Pastor Jim Siefkes (who organized the first Lutheran gay caucus back in 1974), Jeannine Janson (who compiled a booklet containing early LCNA history), Amalia Vagts (the director of Extraordinary Lutheran Ministries), and others.

Louie Crew, the founder of the Episcopal group Integrity, has been very helpful during phone conversations and email correspondence.  His stories also go back to the mid 1970’s.  I have  exchanged emails with Ellen Marie Barrett, the first Episcopal lesbian priest way back in 1977, who provided a poignant look back at the pain of rejection but also the triumph—“I am a priest forever!”  My Episcopal chapters go  to around 1990.

The Presbyterians and the UCC still require a lot of work—those chapters only cover the very early 1970’s.  I have been in touch with More Light Presbyterians and the UCC Coalition, but I now need to follow up on the leads they have provided.  Retired dean of the United Theological Seminary Clyde Steckel has been helpful with early information about the UCC.  Trips to Cleveland and Drew University in New Jersey are likely in the offing, which is where many key persons and records are located.

In addition to these contacts, I have also kept the nearby Arlington Heights Library busy with dozens of inter-library loan requests.  Many official records of national church conventions are available online as well.

Gays in the Pulpit

I have several writing projects underway.  I recently posted about Prowl, a compilation of five short stories based upon my Vietnam experience.  I have also been working on a sequel to A Wretched Man.  Third, last spring I started work on a non-fiction piece, tentatively titled Gays in the Pulpit, which will be a forty-year retrospective on the gay rights movement within the church.  Now that we are settled into our new digs in Arlington Heights, I have again picked up that project in earnest.

I am personally acquainted with many of the more recent heroes of the push for full inclusion including Lutherans Anita Hill, Ruth Frost, Phyllis Zillhart, and Emily Eastwood; United Methodist Amy Delong; and Presbyterian Scott Anderson.  If you click on their names, you will link to prior blog posts about these individuals.

My current research is also introducing me to earlier heroes.  In 1968, Troy Perry was a gay Baptist/Pentecostal preacher who founded the Metropolitan Community Church, which now numbers over 250 predominantly gay congregations internationally.  Father Robert Mary Clement was a gay priest who marched in the first gay pride parade in Greenwich Village and whose Beloved Disciple Church ministered to the gay community of New York City in the early ‘70s.  Bill Johnson was the first openly gay man ordained by an established denomination way back in 1972 by the United Church of Christ.  Ellen Barrett was the first out lesbian to become an Episcopal priest in 1977.

As I am reviewing the data from these early days, I have received invaluable assistance from Rev. Clyde Steckel, retired dean of the United Seminary of the Twin Cities.  Rev. Steckel was witness to and participant in the UCC steps toward gay inclusion in the ‘70s.  The record in the UCC is striking because they were so far ahead of the other mainline denominations.  The UCC accomplishments in the 1970s foreshadowed the actions of the Episcopalians, Lutherans, Presbyterians, and Methodists a full generation later.

In Remembrance

We pay homage today to a pair of clergy leaders in the LGBTQ movement for equality, inclusion, and respect.  To call them icons would be incorrect because that term implies a well-known public face, and these two were quiet crusaders, both of them straight allies.

Paul EgertsonSeventy-five year old Paul Egertson, ELCA pastor and one-time bishop in California, died at his California home yesterday.  Lutherans Concerned North America (LCNA), the LGBTQ advocacy group within the ELCA , issued this statement honoring Bishop Egertson’s memory:

While bishop of the ELCA Southwest California Synod, he participated in the 2001 ordination of Pastor Anita C. Hill of St. Paul-Reformation Lutheran Church, St. Paul, Minnesota.  For this act, he subsequently resigned his position as bishop, and tirelessly advocated for the policy change that finally occurred as a result of the decisions of the 2009 Churchwide Assembly.

Emily Eastwood, Executive Director, Lutherans Concerned, said, “Paul Egertson stood up for us and in opposition to the discrimination of the church against us when that was neither popular nor safe.  His witness to Christ’s redemptive grace and his commitment to helping the church see the error of its position are a shining beacon of prophetic righteousness in the face of determined opposition – and he did it with grace and eloquence, as befits a follower of Christ.  He was a friend and mentor — always available, with words of calming wisdom.  He made a profound difference.  He will be missed.”

Under a blog post titled We’ll Take it From Here, blogger Casey, an ELCA seminarian, wrote of being a young student of Egertson without knowing his history.  She regrets her sophomoric attitude then but now treasures his advocacy with the benefit of a maturing, retrospective point of view.

But as I continued in the Religion department and spent time with professors in discussion outside of the classroom, I found that this man was interesting.

He was a progressive voice in a generation that would not hear him. As the generation that has heard him, it is our responsibility to go forth into the ELCA that he has helped to shape, and to continue to fight along the lines he laid down. I am proud to have been a student of his, and to be joining the ranks of ordained clergy in the ELCA, in order to effect the same kind of change.

Of course, the ELCA and the Episcopal Church are currently in the forefront of progressive Christian denominations that have moved toward full inclusion of the LGBTQ community.  A generation earlier, the United Church of Christ (UCC) became the first mainstream Christian denomination to openly affirm their gay members

RevJuneNorrisBut even before that, a Christian denomination was formed expressly for the purpose of ordaining and celebrating gay inclusivity.  This denomination is known as Metropolitan Community Churches, (MCC), and the second person we honor today is Pastor June Norris who died this week at the age of eighty-eight.  Norris was the first straight person and second woman to be ordained to the ministry of MCC.  From a San Diego Newspaper:

She grew up in a Baptist family in Illinois and married at age 15. She had three children by the time she was 20, divorced after 28 years of marriage and moved to California to seek a new life.

Friends and family said she was a soft-spoken, tenderhearted crusader for equality. “She was nonjudgmental and extremely compassionate,” said her sister, Ruth Mahan. “She accepted people as they were.”

Nephew Ted Sweet, who introduced her to MCC, said he and his aunt agreed to attend her church on Saturday and go to his church on Sunday. “I took her to (MCC) and she never left. The people were so receptive to her and welcomed her,” Sweet said. Rev. Norris would later say she felt called to the ministry at the L.A. church.

Sweet said Rev. Norris had a gift for helping people. “She had one of the most soothing voices in the world. No matter how upset I was, I just had to talk to her on the phone and I’d feel better,” he said. “She just had a way of communicating that took all the pain and hurt away.”

We conclude with the sentiment expressed by blogger Casey.   With thanks for these early leaders, Casey promises, “We’ll take it from here”.

Friday shoutouts

Platz ordination Did you know that it’s been forty years since the first woman was ordained in a North American Lutheran denomination (a predecessor to the ELCA)?  Here’s a link and a quote from the ELCA news release:

In 1970 the Lutheran Church in America (LCA) ordained [Rev. Elizabeth A. Platz] at U Maryland’s Memorial Chapel, where she serves today.  Platz, the first woman ordained a Lutheran pastor in North America, has served her entire ministry as UM Lutheran campus pastor.  On Nov. 22 this year, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will mark the 40th anniversary of her ordination.

Pastor Sarah Scherschligt, who blogs as Barefoot Pastor, offers an excellent retrospective as well as questioning whether female clergy are all the way the way to full acceptance yet.

I have blogged extensively about the Rites of Reception for LGBTQ clergy who were formerly ordained extraordinarily.  In particular, I focused on the San Francisco Rite a few months ago and the St Paul Rite a few weeks ago.  Other, less publicized, Rites are also proceeding forthwith.  

Pastor Jen NagelLast Sunday, September 26th, Pastor Jen Nagel was welcomed to the roster of the Minneapolis Area Synod of the ELCA in a Rite of Reception at Salem English Lutheran Church of Minneapolis where Pastor Jen has served since 2003.  Actually, the service was held at a nearby theater due to construction issues at Salem, which will soon move into new space in a shared ministry with Lyndale United Church of Christ (of course, the United Church of Christ is a full communion partner with the ELCA). Pastor Jen was ordained at Salem English Lutheran in January of 2008.  Minneapolis Area Synod Bishop Craig Johnson presided at the Rite of Reception.

Pastor Lura GroenOn November 7th, Pastor Lura Groen of Grace Lutheran Church of Houston, Texas will be added to the roster of the Gulf Coast Synod in a Rite of Reception at Grace.  Gulf Coast Synod Bishop Mike Rinehart will preside at the Rite, which is being called “No Longer Strangers”.  On the homepage of Grace’s website, Pastor Lura offers her gratitude to the courageous pioneers of Grace for extending a call to her:

Dear People of Grace-

Two years ago, you made the bold and Spirit-filled decision to call the best pastor for you, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. And being the person you called, I’m awfully glad you did! But also, as your pastor, I am so proud of your witness.

It is a good thing to see the Spirit at work in the church, and to celebrate what God has done at Grace. And even more beautiful to know this is only one of the great things God is doing here!

I hope you see the Holy Spirit working in your own, individual lives too! In addition to the presence that calms and comforts you, I hope you experience God calling you into new, risky, beautiful things. And- I hope you’re sharing them with each other, and with me, when it happens!

I am always proud to serve such a justice-loving congregation, and such wonderful people.

God is still speaking, comma

Ten months ago at the General Synod of the United Church of Christ (UCC), the keynote address was offered by the Rev Otis Moss III.  Here is a report of his stirring sermon from my blog post dated June 30, 2009:

God says I am the Alpha and the Omega, COMMA, who is, COMMA, and who was, COMMA, and who is to come, COMMA.

In a mind-jolting, three-minute recitation of the history of Christianity, Moss shouted a COMMA between each event, all the way through to the 1957 creation of the United Church of Christ and the presence of John Thomas as General Minister, who introduced him Friday night.

Don’t get angry with the haters, the Rush Limbaughs. Next time you hear them, just say, ‘COMMA!’ When you see Dick Cheney, just say, ‘COMMA!’ Remember, there used to be a period on Pennsylvania Avenue. At Calvary, death wanted to place a period, but Jesus got up on Sunday morning. ‘COMMA!’

The UCC has created a short video, entitled “The Language of God” which utilizes the theme of the “comma” to suggest that God still speaks.  Enjoy.

The UCC and gay ordination: thirty-eight years and counting

I have been and will continue to be a cheerleader for my beloved ELCA, and I will defend with pride her courageous decision last summer to include our LGBT brothers and sisters in ordained ministry and to offer blessing of their relationships.  I have also blogged extensively about the parallel Episcopal efforts to include “all the baptized in all the sacraments.”  But, there is one denomination that we sometimes overlook and take for granted; the United Church of Christ (UCC) was the original pioneer in recognizing gay clergy over a generation ago.  I have friends in my local UCC congregation, and their attitude towards the new ELCA policy is “what took you so long.”

Lutherans in ecumenical news

Episcopal Life online reports that the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Denmark has joined the Porvoo Communion

This is the name given to a report issued at the conclusion of theological conversations by official representatives of four Anglican Churches and eight Nordic and Baltic Churches in 1989-1992. The Porvoo Common Statement included the text of the Porvoo Declaration, which the participants commended for acceptance to their Churches.

They were the Churches of England and Ireland, the Church in Wales and the Episcopal Church of Scotland, together with the Churches of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, and the Evangelical-Lutheran Churches of Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia and Lithuania. Acceptance by the signatory churches means that for the first time the Anglican Churches in Britain and Ireland have now moved into visible communion with other national Churches in Europe.

Map of Porvoo participantsPreviously, the Denmark church had merely been an observer and not a signatory due to differences over the ordination of female bishops.  (The Danish Lutherans favored female bishops).  According to the Danes, Anglican bishops have “changed their positions considerably” on such issues, and there are no longer any doctrinal obstacles to membership.

Meanwhile, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) announces that their “Eastern Synod will host the North American region’s preparatory meeting for the July 2010 Eleventh Assembly of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF).”   

The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) is a global communion of Christian churches in the Lutheran tradition. Founded in 1947 in Lund, Sweden, the LWF now has 140 member churches in 79 countries all over the world representing over 68.9 million Christians.

The Canadian report indicates that there are three North American Lutheran denominations that belong to the Lutheran World Federation: the ELCIC, the ELCA, and the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church Abroad.  The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) and the Wisconsin Synod (WELS), the second and third largest Lutheran denominations in the US after the ELCA, do not belong to LWF.  The LWF has been front and center of Haiti disaster relief.  ELCA president Mark Hanson currently holds the presidency of the LWF, which has its international headquarters in Geneva.

Today, the ELCA and the Moravian Church will celebrate ten years of full communion partnership at Augsburg Lutheran Church, Winston-Salem, N.C.

Leaders and members of the denominations will be attending the worship service.  The Rev. Mark S. Hanson, ELCA presiding bishop, will preside and the Rt. Rev. Dr. D. Wayne Burkette, president, Provincial Elders’ Conference, Moravian Church North America, Southern Province, will be preaching.

The Moravian Church is one of six full communion partners of the ELCA (United Methodist, Episcopal, Presbyterian, UCC, and Reformed Church of America).

The ELCA takes seriously its call to act ecumenically for the sake of the world and not for itself alone. Unity does not mean that two churches merge; rather, in reaching consensus churches also respect difference. In this way, full communion is when two churches develop a relationship based on a common confessing of the Christian faith and a mutual recognition of baptism and sharing of the Lord’s Supper.  These denominations likewise jointly worship, may exchange clergy, and also share a commitment to evangelism, witness and service in the world.

Jan Hus The Moravian church has its origins in 15th century Bohemia and Moravia (now part of the Czech Republic).  They trace their heritage to reformer Jan Hus, who predated Luther and who was burned at the stake for his heresy.  Hus and his followers planted the seeds of reformation which came to fruition under Luther, Calvin, and others a century later.  The Moravians arrived in the US in 1741.  Their website offers much more of their proud history.

Couple meets in Gay Men’s Chorus: LGBT faith story number three

Booklet coverThis is the third of ten installments of LGBT faith stories from the Minneapolis/St Paul area.  These stories are taken from a booklet published by the Joint Synod Committee for Inclusivity of the twin cities metro area synods of the ELCA.  The compiler and author of the booklet is Kari Aanestad, a seminarian at Luther Seminary in St Paul.

These stories are published here in anticipation of the 2009 ELCA convention in Minneapolis that begins August 17th.  Gay marriage and gay clergy proposals will be considered, and the ELCA may become the largest Christian denomination to allow same-gender marriage and to ordain gays who live in an open and committed relationship.  The ELCA consists of nearly five million members in the US.  The United Church of Christ (UCC) with around one million members already allows gay marriage and gay clergy, and the Episcopal Church of around two million members recently concluded a historic convention that opened the doors for full participation in “all the sacraments for all the baptized.”

Here is the story of Karl and Christopher, “so darn happy together” that they inspire a niece in a society of broken relationships.

Karl Starr and Christopher Haug, partners for over 15 years, greeted me together at the front door and welcomed me into their comfortable living room. An upright piano stood against the south wall, surrounded by a pumpkin suede couch and dark wooden chairs. An Evangelical Lutheran Worship hymnal was propped up in the center of the piano, surrounded by dozens of framed family pictures. Dark wooden shelves housing healthy green plants lined the walls of their dining room. As their surroundings suggested, their stories soon showed that the Lutheran Church and music are important to both of these men.

“We always have done more than sit in the pew,” Karl said.

“Church isn’t just worship for us; it’s also community,” Christopher added.

Christopher was raised in the Lutheran Church of America and was active until a period in college, when he pulled away. Surprisingly, he became involved in the church again after he came out as a gay man. He joined a Saint Paul church where he regularly attended and was actively involved there until he met Karl. Karl is also a lifelong Lutheran. He was baptized at one month old on Reformation Sunday in 1956 and has been a part of the Lutheran church ever since.

“There was a three-week period when I didn’t go to church during college at Saint Olaf,” Karl said. “That was my rebellious phase.”

After graduating from Saint Olaf, he found a new church community in the Twin Cities by September. The two men met in the Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus after having both recently
ended relationships. The timing of their meeting was more than serendipitous. They were born three months apart and grew up a mile-and-a-half apart on the same South Minneapolis street. They both moved to different states during their teen years and returned to the Twin Cities area for college, attending private Lutheran schools. After graduating, they both worked for insurance companies for a time, yet they never met until they were 34 years old.

“It seems like the Holy Spirit kept us apart until we were ready for each other,” Karl said.

After attending Christopher’s church for two years, Christopher and Karl began attending a Lutheran church in downtown Minneapolis, chiefly because Karl’s mom was a member there and could not drive anymore. Karl took her keys and promised to get her to church every Sunday. Both men have been significant members of their faith communities throughout their adult lives. Karl’s involvement in church leadership stems from a lifelong calling to serve the Lutheran church, which he has had to fulfill in creative ways.

“The only job I’ve ever aspired to is that of a Lutheran pastor,” he said, “but I realized during my college years that the Lutheran church’s expectations around sexual behavioral norms didn’t square well with me because I knew I was gay.  I don’t know how I could have lived with the tension of either being celibate or being closeted and deceptive — I don’t think I could do either. I consider myself fortunate to have figured that out early on and made the decision to live out my faith as an active lay person.”

He has been able to do so by being involved in Twin Cities Lutheran churches for nearly 30 years. Karl attended one church for 27 years, and during that time he was a Sunday school teacher, a confirmation teacher, a Sunday school superintendent, the church council secretary, the congregation’s treasurer, vice president and president, the stewardship director and the education director. He also helped lead several capital campaigns, call committees and a campaign to make the church handicap-accessible. Karl was especially proud of the success of that campaign.

“When I was in my early 30s, I thought that if we were serious about the church being a house of God for all people, then we needed to make it a house in which all people could come, get inside and have their basic needs met while they were there,” he said. “It took a lot of study, work, and persuading, but eventually our congregation of 500 people raised a quarter of a million dollars for the renovations. We bought a run-down house next door to the church, tore it down, and turned it into a handicap-parking lot. We added a grade-level entrance with an elevator that could go up or down. Both able-bodied and disabled-bodied people went in and out of the same door. Christopher is also serving the church as a team member of the environmental planning committee. He helps decorate the vaulted space each liturgical season and holiday. Karl’s most recent project for his church is to promote hospitality within the community.

“Our church is a really warm and caring place once you crack the surface,” Karl said. “We’re just typical Scandinavian reserved. The longtime members, sweet as they are, are old Norwegian Lutherans. We can’t seem to break out of that reservation and overtly welcome guests.”

Members of their new church have shown their appreciation for Karl and Christopher.

”We are with Karl’s mother every Sunday in church, making sure she gets to the front of the church to receive communion. We’re just doing the things you do for your family, and people compliment and praise us for it. They see that Karl and I are a couple, but any problems with that seem irrelevant because we’re doing all of these other things that impact people’s perceptions.”

“Of course, that’s not why we’re doing all of that for our family,” Karl said. “We’re doing it because it’s the right thing. It’s neat to see how when you do the right thing by being committed, responsible and loyal, you see how it affects other people.”

Karl and Christopher have set an example of what commitment can look like, and they certainly have changed hearts and minds. When they held their blessing ceremony at their Saint Paul Lutheran church, both of their pastors participated. Years earlier, Karl’s pastor had shared with him that Karl was the first openly gay man he had ever known and with whom he had openly interacted.

“In the course of less than 10 years, my pastor went from the point of my being the first person he knew was gay to presiding at my union ceremony — that’s a lot of growth for him,” Karl commented.

Christopher commented that his niece is also inspired by his relationship with Karl.

“Whenever people say that it is impossible to stay happily married, she just points to us. We’re not deliberately trying to be an example of a good relationship. We’re just so darn happy together, and we let that show.”

When asked whether they’d ever faced conflict as outspoken leaders and openly gay men in a Lutheran community, Karl responded, “There are moments when I could conceive of walking away from it all. But then there are people like our pastor and my mom’s friends in church who think the most of us and are working to make sure we’re included.”

“There are lots of reasons to give up,” Christopher added, “but we get lots of encouragement
and reinforcement too.”

“I’m just getting tired of the never-ending debate in the national church regarding the ordination of gay clergy,” Karl said. “All of the announcements, committees, declarations, and studies are exhausting. How much more can they study us? ”

“Gay people are already in leadership and service positions in every direction you can think of,” Christopher said. “Hetero folks are starting to see that and realize that gay people are also fellow redeemed children of God with gifts who also feel called to apply those gifts to service.”

“In spite of the frustrations, there is value for people like Christopher and me to be involved
in the mainstream Lutheran church and to let our lights shine.”

A word from the conventions, Part II: UCC, Episcopal, ELCA

An earlier post reported on the closing of the Mennonite USA convention and the opening of the United Church of Christ (UCC) General Synod. Since then, the UCC has concluded its business; meanwhile, the triennial General Convention of the Episcopal Church will convene in Anaheim on July 8.

Ballots

The main order of business for the UCC was the pro forma election of The Rev. Geoffrey Black to succeed the Rev. John Thomas as General Minister and President. Thomas was ineligible for an additional term. That Black was selected without opposition symbolized the unity and lack of divisive issues at the 27th General Synod. The UCC is one of the mainline Protestant denominations that welcomes gay clergy, and they appear to be at peace with the issue.

The Episcopal Church is also a denomination that ordains gay clergy, but the issue continues to roil. At the 76th General Convention since 1785, LGBT issues will dominate:

The Episcopal Church’s 45-year debate over human sexuality and the appropriate response to the desire of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people to participate fully in the church’s life will occupy General Convention’s attention once again as it meets July 8-17 in Anaheim, California.

Deputies and bishops are being asked to reconsider the 2006 convention’s stand that the church “exercise restraint by not consenting to the consecration of any candidate to the episcopate whose manner of life presents a challenge to the wider church and will lead to further strains on communion.”

The Episocopal Church is part of the worldwide Anglican communion, and the 2006 resolution sought to mollify international concern with the episcopacy of gay Bishop Eugene Robinson of New Hampshire, in a classic “don’t rock the boat” expression of church polity over principle. As the 2009 General Convention approaches, the Episcopalian blogosphere is electric with anticipation.

Elizabeth Kaeton, a self-described “joyful Christian who claims the fullness of the Anglican tradition of being evangelical, Anglo-Catholic, charismatic, orthodox and radical”, serves as Pastor of an Episocopalian parish in New Jersey. In her “Telling Secrets” blog, she has a telling video that addresses the perception that all African Anglicans have a negative attitude toward gay inclusion.

From the opposite coast, Pastor Susan Russell of California offers regular updates and a photo montage of the Integrity Team in preparation for the General Convention at her “Inch at A Time” blog. Pastor Russell also serves as President of Integrity USA, “a faithful witness of God’s inclusive love to the Episcopal Church and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. We are working for the full inclusion of all the baptized in all the sacraments,” and the Integrity blog also has frequent updates.

Meanwhile, ELCA members and churches continue their 50 day prayer vigil that points toward their 2009 Churchwide Assembly in Mpls that begins August 17 and which will consider the ELCA versions of LGBT resolutions. I plan to be present in MPLS to liveblog the daily events.
